Yobe Assembly repeals state revenue codification law
Yobe State Assembly Advances Tax Administration Bill
The Yobe State House of Assembly has fast-tracked a bill aimed at repealing the State Revenue Codification Law and enacting a new Tax Administration Law. The executive branch introduced the measure, which passed its second reading following extensive debate among members.
House Leader Hon. Nasiru Hassan Yusuf emphasized the importance of the proposed law, stating it would create a modern, comprehensive, and efficient framework for tax administration, assessment, and collection. He outlined several new mechanisms featured in the bill, including electronic taxpayer registration, digital tax assessments, online payment systems, and electronic record-keeping.
Yusuf noted that these enhancements aim to reduce instances of multiple taxation, improve operational efficiency, and prevent revenue leaks. He added that the new tax administration system aligns with the federal government’s objectives to boost revenue generation, which is critical for sectors such as education, healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure, water supply, and security.
Supporters of the bill, including Hon. Buba Ibrahim Kalallawa, Hon. Mohammed Isa Bello, and Hon. Sanda Kara Bade, described it as both timely and necessary.
Following the debate, Speaker Rt. Hon. Chiroma Buba Mashio referred the bill to the House Standing Committee on Finance and Appropriation for further consideration.
In a separate development, the House adopted a report from the Joint Standing Committees on Health, alongside the Yobe State Drugs and Medical Consumables Management Agency (YODMA) and the Yobe State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (YSCHMA). This report pertains to a bill advocating for the establishment of the Yobe State Agency for Drug Abuse Control and Rehabilitation.
