‘You can make money without corruption’ – Sanusi tells professionals

Emir of Kano Urges Professionals to Combat Corruption

KANO, Nigeria — Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II of Kano warned against corrupt practices in professional fields during his address at the 60th anniversary of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators of Nigeria (ICSAN) and the inauguration of its Kano State Chapter on Thursday.

Sanusi emphasized that public service should prioritize responsibility over personal enrichment, asserting that professionals are essential in restoring ethical standards in both the public and private sectors. He stated that integrity is fundamental to the nation’s development.

“People can earn without being corrupt, award contracts without accepting bribes, and build roads without engaging in illegal activities,” he said.

The Emir pointed out that corruption flourishes when individuals exploit public office for personal gain, reiterating that those seeking profit should pursue business rather than public service.

He also called for a revival of ethical values in governance and civil service, highlighting that Nigeria’s progress has been hampered by a decline in discipline and accountability. Sanusi reflected on a time when the civil service was robust, noting the pivotal roles of permanent secretaries in upholding order and adherence to regulations.
