Youths protest, set Gwarzo LG building ablaze over rising insecurity
Protest Erupts in Gwarzo Over Growing Insecurity
Gwarzo, Nigeria — Tensions flared in Gwarzo, the headquarters of Gwarzo Local Government, on Sunday following a violent protest sparked by escalating insecurity in the region. Demonstrators reportedly set part of a government building ablaze as frustrations boiled over.
Initially, the protest began as a peaceful assembly driven by concerns over frequent bandit attacks, which have left local residents in a state of fear and uncertainty. Eyewitnesses reported that hundreds of youths took to the streets, chanting slogans demanding immediate government action to address the emerging security crisis.
The situation intensified when some protesters marched toward the Local Government Secretariat. Reports indicate that a faction of the demonstrators entered the premises, leading to an escalation of tensions. Soon after, flames erupted from a section of the building, sending thick smoke into the air and causing panic among residents and bystanders.
A witness described a growing sense of anger among the community, stating, “People are tired of sleeping in fear. The attacks have become too frequent, and there is no strong response. That is why the youths reacted this way.”
Another community member urged for calm, cautioning that the destruction of public property could exacerbate the situation. “We understand the frustration, but violence will not solve the problem. What we need is dialogue and urgent security action,” he said.
In response to the unrest, security personnel were deployed throughout Gwarzo to restore order and prevent further escalation. Authorities are reportedly working to contain the situation and investigate the incident.
