2027: Suspend large gatherings in Kano – Analyst tells Governor Yusuf

Public Affairs Analyst Urges Suspension of Large Gatherings in Kano Ahead of 2027 Elections

KANO, Nigeria — Abdullahi Muhammad, a public affairs analyst, has called on Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf to suspend large gatherings to prevent political violence as the 2027 general elections approach.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Muhammad emphasized the necessity for safer campaign practices in light of escalating violence tied to political rivalries.

He highlighted the recent increase in violence associated with local gangs, known as ‘yan daba,’ warning that it poses a significant threat to lives, properties, and the integrity of the electoral process. “We cannot allow political ambition to be paid for in blood and fear by the citizens,” he stated. Muhammad added that the scale of violence observed is “unacceptable,” urging that politicians who finance and utilize gangs should be held accountable.

His remarks come as concerns over political violence in the state grow in the lead-up to the elections.

Governor Yusuf recently transitioned from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), a move that has not been well-received by his political mentor, former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. Kwankwaso currently serves as the vice-presidential candidate for the New Nigeria Democratic Party (NNDP), with Peter Obi as the party’s presidential candidate in the upcoming election.
