Abuja — Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for retaining Senator Kashim Shettima as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election. Zulum highlighted that this marks a significant milestone, as it is the first time a native of Borno State and the Northeast will hold the vice presidential position and be nominated for a potential second term.

The governor made these remarks following a ceremony at the State House on Thursday, where President Tinubu officially presented Shettima with a certificate confirming his selection as the All Progressives Congress (APC) vice-presidential candidate.

“I wish to extend my thanks to President Tinubu for renominating our son, Senator Kashim Shettima, as Vice President,” Zulum said. He indicated that he aimed to arrange a visit from representatives of northeastern states to express their gratitude personally.

Zulum noted that the president approved this request, emphasizing regional pride. “We have never experienced something like this before,” he stated, recalling a previous attempt during the tenure of Shehu Musa Yar’Adua that fell short. “Our son has become the number two leader of Nigeria, and we are elated.”

He also recognized that the vice presidential role transcends Borno State, representing the interests of all of Northern Nigeria. Zulum thanked the broader Northern community for their support of Shettima’s nomination.

The visit from northeastern state representatives is scheduled for next week, as the region continues to celebrate this historic development.
