22-year-old man gets 20 years for sexually assaulting his mother
A 22-year-old man from South Africa has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for raping his biological mother in Carnarvon, Northern Cape. The sentence was handed down by the Carnarvon Regional Court after DNA evidence linked him to the assault that occurred on November 23, 2025. He ultimately pleaded guilty to the charges.
At the time of the incident, the 42-year-old victim was at home with her partner, and both had been drinking before going to sleep. The accused had also consumed alcohol at a friend’s house before returning home. Upon finding his mother and her partner asleep, he assaulted his mother while she was unconscious.
The victim woke up during the assault and confronted her son, who fled the scene. She subsequently informed her partner about the incident, and they reported it to the police.
Mojalefa Senokoatsane, a spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), noted that the accused initially denied the allegations but later pleaded guilty when confronted with compelling evidence, which included the victim’s testimony and DNA results.
In a victim impact statement presented in court, the woman described the profound hurt and betrayal she felt from her son, whom she had raised as a single parent. She indicated that the trauma from the assault continues to affect her, leading to ongoing counseling and sleep difficulties.
The court acknowledged the guilty plea in its sentencing decision but deemed the severity of the crime warranted a substantial prison term. In addition to the prison sentence, the man was ordered to register on the National Register for Sex Offenders.
