Idoma Development Association Condemns Recent Violence in Benue State
The Idoma Development Association (IDA) has condemned a recent surge of violent attacks in Benue State, specifically highlighting the recent killings in Agatu Local Government Area and the abduction of commuters, including candidates for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) along the Otukpo axis.
In a statement released by spokesperson Christian Ekre, the IDA described the incidents as “deeply disturbing,” emphasizing that ongoing violence has instilled fear among local communities.
The association expressed alarm over the recurring violence in Agatu, where many residents have been killed, displaced, or forced to flee their homes.
The IDA specifically denounced the kidnapping of students who were traveling to take their UTME exams, labeling it a “cruel and senseless act” that jeopardizes the future of the youth.
National President Alex Odoh commented on the situation, warning that it presents a serious threat to peace and the survival of the Idoma people.
“We are deeply disturbed by the continued loss of lives in our communities,” Odoh stated. “These repeated assaults are unacceptable and must not be allowed to continue unchecked. The abduction of young students on their way to secure their future is particularly heartbreaking and speaks to the level of insecurity we now face.”
Odoh urged that the association would not remain silent as communities become “zones of fear and bloodshed,” and called on local authorities to take prompt action.
The IDA called on both the Benue State Government and security agencies to enhance efforts to rescue abducted victims, bring perpetrators to justice, and improve security in vulnerable areas.
“The Idoma nation deserves to live in peace, to farm without fear, to travel safely, and to pursue education without threat,” Odoh added. “Anything short of this is a failure of responsibility.”
The association also urged both federal and state governments to transition from routine condemnations to implementing lasting solutions that address the root causes of insecurity in the region.
Finally, the IDA reaffirmed its solidarity with affected families and communities, committing to continue advocating for justice, safety, and the protection of lives and property across Idoma land.
