Abia Govt cautions doctors against rejecting emergency patients over money

Abia Medical Personnel Urged to Prioritize Patient Care Over Payment
Umuahia, Abia State — Medical professionals in Abia hospitals received an important directive to prioritize the immediate care of patients in emergency situations, regardless of payment status. This reminder came during a training program organized by the Abia State government for healthcare workers, including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and laboratory technicians.
The training, aimed at preparing Patients Liaison Officers (PLOs) in hospitals, included guidance on improving communication with patients and their families. Participants were advised to use respectful language and maintain a compassionate approach to care.
Dr. Nnenna Ihekoromadu, Chief Executive Officer of Quantus Medical Foundation, addressed attendees about the importance of fostering a positive patient-provider relationship. She emphasized that individuals seeking medical care deserve to be treated with dignity and kindness, which can enhance their recovery.
“It is unacceptable to leave an emergency patient to fate simply because they cannot pay upfront,” Dr. Ihekoromadu said. “Medical staff must stabilize and treat patients before discussing payment options.”
Dr. Ihekoromadu also called on the Nigerian government to improve compensation packages for healthcare workers to enable them to perform their duties effectively.
