NBC warns TV anchors against bullying guests, compromising neutrality

Nigerian Government Issues Warning to Broadcasters for Code Violations
The Nigerian government has cautioned television broadcasters and their anchors regarding violations of the country’s broadcasting regulations.
The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) delivered this warning in a formal notice to broadcasters on Friday. This action follows reports of an increase in unprofessional conduct among news outlets across Nigeria.
In its statement, the NBC emphasized the need for strict adherence to the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, specifically highlighting requirements related to fairness, accuracy, balance, and respect for constitutional institutions. The commission underscored the responsibility of broadcasters, including prominent networks such as Arise Television and Channels TV, to maintain professionalism when reporting on sensitive issues, including politics, communal conflicts, and wartime events.
The NBC outlined that presenters who misrepresent their personal opinions as facts, intimidate guests, deny a fair hearing to opposing views, or display any form of disrespect toward human dignity could face sanctions.
The commission called for a renewed commitment to journalistic standards to ensure the integrity of news reporting in Nigeria.
