Another attempt to silence media – Atiku slams NBC Code of Conduct advisory

Atiku Abubakar Criticizes NBC’s Code of Conduct Advisory
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, a leading member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has condemned the recent Code of Conduct advisory issued by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC). He characterized the advisory as an effort to undermine press freedom and limit free expression in Nigeria.
In a statement released Saturday through his official X account, Abubakar expressed concern over the timing and implications of the advisory. “The Code of Conduct advisory issued by the National Broadcasting Commission is yet another troubling attempt to muzzle the media and shrink the space for free expression in Nigeria,” he said.
Abubakar emphasized the significance of the media, noting its recognition worldwide for resilience and professionalism. He criticized the NBC for implementing stringent directives, particularly during election periods, arguing that such actions tend to silence dissent rather than promote ethical journalism.
“I stand firmly with Nigeria’s broadcast industry and all media platforms resisting this creeping censorship,” he stated.
The former vice president underscored that ethical journalism should not vary with electoral cycles, insisting that it remains a continuous obligation. He also suggested that the regulatory measures reflect a broader agenda to control narratives rather than ensuring a free and transparent electoral process.
In response, the NBC issued a notice highlighting that broadcasters are expected to maintain neutrality and uphold ethical standards at all times. The commission warned that any broadcaster found expressing personal opinions as facts, bullying or intimidating guests, or failing to provide opposing views with fair representation would be in violation of broadcast regulations.
