Niger CAN chairman laments insecurity, says nobody safe in Nigeria

Security Concerns Raised by Christian Association of Nigeria Chairman

MINNA, Nigeria — Most Reverend Bulus Dauwa Yohanna, Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) for the Niger State Chapter, has expressed alarm over the deteriorating security situation in Nigeria, emphasizing that the nation is becoming increasingly unsafe for its citizens.

During a CAN council meeting held at the State Secretariat in Minna, Bishop Yohanna, who also leads the Catholic Diocese of Kontagora, stated that the country has “nosedived into a state of fear” due to ongoing insecurity, economic hardships, and what he termed unfulfilled promises from leaders.

He pointed out that the escalating violence has prompted foreign governments to issue travel advisories against visiting certain states and even Abuja, the nation’s capital, citing fears of potential attacks.

“Who is safe, and where in Nigeria can one boast of safety? If military generals and senior security officers can be killed, then who cannot be killed?” he asked.

Bishop Yohanna highlighted various incidents of violence, including kidnappings, abductions, killings, and the devastation of properties and agricultural lands, which he claims have disrupted communities nationwide.

He expressed concern regarding social media reports and security alerts suggesting possible attacks in Abuja and Niger State, referencing an alleged leaked memo from the Nigeria Customs Service that discussed threats to government facilities and military installations. He urged citizens to exercise vigilance and engage in prayer.

“The current situation calls for vigilance, security awareness, and prayers for divine intervention,” he remarked. “I believe that one day, good will triumph over evil.”

Bishop Yohanna called on President Bola Tinubu and Niger State Governor Umar Bago to implement stronger security measures, cautioning that “there is no smoke without fire.” He emphasized that improvements in Nigeria’s circumstances will rely on collective efforts by citizens to initiate positive change, warning that failure to address these issues will have widespread repercussions across various sectors of national life.
