Federal Court Summons Witnesses in Emefiele Fraud Case
Justice Hamza Muazu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court has issued subpoenas for two key witnesses in the fraud trial of former Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele, who faces charges related to an alleged $6.23 million fraud.
Witnesses Jim Obazee and Eloho Okpoziakpo are scheduled to testify on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. They are expected to remain in the courtroom for the duration of the proceedings.
Emefiele is being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on an amended 20-count indictment that includes counts of criminal breach of trust, forgery, abuse of office, and conspiracy to defraud.
In the subpoena issued on April 27, 2026, Justice Muazu instructed the witnesses to present relevant evidence, including newspaper articles related to the controversial Naira redesign policy. The judge noted that both witnesses played roles in investigations pertaining to the charges against Emefiele and will clarify aspects of the policy in question.
The ongoing case is part of broader legal actions against Emefiele, with prosecutors alleging financial misconduct totaling $6.23 million.
