Super Eagles vs Three Lions: Ola Aina opens up on dumping England for Nigeria

Nottingham Forest Defender Ola Aina Discusses His Switch to Nigeria

Nottingham Forest defender Ola Aina has explained his decision to shift his international allegiance from England to Nigeria. Born in London’s Southwark borough to Nigerian parents, Aina appeared poised to join the senior English national team, having played for various age-level squads, including U16 through U21.

Despite his experience with the Young Lions, Aina trained with Nigeria’s Super Eagles in London in March 2017, which ultimately influenced his decision to represent Nigeria. He had yet to earn a U21 cap at that time.

The transition from England to Nigeria required FIFA approval, as Aina was provisionally cap-tied to England. He made his debut for the Super Eagles during a World Cup qualifier against Zambia in October 2017.

In an interview with Nottingham Forest’s YouTube channel, Aina emphasized the impact of his Nigerian heritage on his decision. “Born and raised in London, I chose to play for Nigeria. That’s where my parents are from; that’s my heritage,” he said.

He further noted that his family takes pride in his achievements on the international stage, particularly when he wears the Super Eagles jersey. “It’s a privilege; it’s an honor. It’s truly remarkable to play for them,” Aina expressed.

Aina played a crucial role in Nigeria’s journey to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. His performances earned him a place in the tournament’s official Team of the Tournament.
