Breaking: Turaki-led PDP faction loses as Supreme Court voids Ibadan convention

Supreme Court Voids PDP National Convention in Ibadan

By Ikechukwu Nnochiri

ABUJA — The Supreme Court of Nigeria has annulled the national convention held by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ibadan, Oyo State, on November 15 and 16, 2025. This convention resulted in the emergence of a factional leadership led by Tanimu Turaki, SAN.

The convention had been mired in legal challenges prior to the Supreme Court’s ruling. A Federal High Court had previously prohibited the event, citing violations of the party’s constitution and a failure to follow due process. The court highlighted the unresolved disputes stemming from state congresses and noted the exclusion of certain aspirants from the proceedings, rendering the exercise defective.

Despite the court’s order, the convention proceeded, resulting in additional legal actions. The Court of Appeal later upheld the lower court’s ruling, asserting that the convention was conducted in defiance of valid judicial directives and that its outcomes were invalid.

In response to these concurrent judgments, the Turaki-led faction appealed to the Supreme Court, hoping to overturn the previous rulings and validate both the convention and its newly elected executives.

The apex court’s decision to void the Ibadan convention reinforces the earlier rulings, effectively concluding the legal dispute regarding the legitimacy of the factional leadership formed during the event.
