2027: Deputy Speaker, Kalu dismisses Abia APC’s preferred candidates list

By Ugochukwu Alaribe

UMUAHIA—Chief Benjamin Kalu, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, has dismissed rumors regarding a purported secret list of preferred candidates from the Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the upcoming 2027 general elections.

Tension has arisen among APC aspirants in the state following claims of a shortlisted list for the primaries. Kalu responded by emphasizing that only democratic processes, as outlined in the party’s constitution, would determine the candidates.

“The speculation about a compiled list is contrary to the principles of participatory democracy,” Kalu stated. He further clarified that the party recognizes two legitimate methods for conducting primaries: direct elections and voluntary consensus among aspirants.

According to Kalu, aspirants must either build grassroots support for direct primaries or engage in meaningful consultations to reach a consensus candidate, in compliance with the Electoral Act and APC guidelines.

He urged party members to disregard any claims of an existing secret list concerning the House of Assembly, National Assembly, or gubernatorial primaries.

“Members are advised to dismiss any assumptions regarding the existence of such a list. If it were to exist, my announcement renders it null and void,” Kalu said.

He asserted that the participatory spirit guiding the APC’s recent congresses would similarly influence the upcoming primaries.

“The approach we took during our congresses, focused on inclusivity, will carry through to our primaries,” he noted.

Kalu called on party members to remain united and dedicated to strengthening the APC as they prepare for future elections.

“We have a significant task ahead. Let us continue our efforts to position the party for electoral success in the next year,” he stated. “Together, despite any disruptions, we will build a strong and resilient APC. We are confident in our unity and electoral prospects as we approach the 2027 elections.”
