Nigerian Navy uncovers ammunition, explosive-making materials in Rivers-Bayelsa creek

Nigerian Navy Discovers Suspected Staging Camp in Rivers and Bayelsa
The Nigerian Navy has announced the discovery of a suspected staging camp in the creek regions of Rivers and Bayelsa, including the recovery of ammunition and materials for explosives.
The Navy stated that the camp is believed to be linked to hostile activities in the Rivers and Bayelsa creek corridor, an area that has seen heightened surveillance and patrols in recent weeks.
In a statement on Thursday, Abiodun Folorunsho, the Naval Director of Information, reported that personnel from the Nigerian Navy Ship NNS SOROH made the discovery while deployed in the Soku area.
The operation was initiated following the sighting of suspicious movements by occupants of a high-powered speedboat during routine security patrols. Folorunsho described the boat, equipped with a 200-horsepower engine, as initially transporting six individuals dressed in unverified uniforms from the Sangama Community to the Russia Community Creek, which borders the Olowaseri area of Bayelsa State.
The individuals reportedly offloaded three companions in a manner deemed suspicious before the boat retreated into nearby creeks. Folorunsho emphasized the need for a patrol team to investigate the unusual movements.
Following the investigation, naval personnel located a suspected hideout and staging camp within the creek. During the operation, they seized 50 rounds of 7.62 mm special ammunition concealed in a water container, along with additional items thought to support illegal activities in the area.
Other recovered materials included old vehicle batteries, various electrical wires, and containers with unidentified foul-smelling substances marked with red straps. Preliminary assessments indicate that some items may be linked to the creation of improvised explosive devices or actions aimed at pipeline vandalism.
The site and associated materials were destroyed to prevent any further criminal use. Meanwhile, the recovered ammunition and specific items remain in custody for continued investigation.
