Peace Corps raises concerns over continued bandits’ invasions of schools across Nigeria

Peace Corps of Nigeria Raises Alarm Over Attacks on Schools

ABUJA — The Peace Corps of Nigeria (PCN) has voiced significant concerns regarding the ongoing assaults on educational institutions by armed groups across the country. These attacks have led to the abduction of students and teachers for ransom.

During a press conference held Wednesday in Abuja, PCN National Commandant Dickson Akoh cautioned that if the wave of violence continues, it could severely undermine the integrity of Nigeria’s educational system.

Akoh stated that such assaults not only result in psychological trauma and fear among students but also deter parents from enrolling their children in schools, risking the future of Nigeria’s youth.

In response to the increasing insecurity, particularly the frequent targeting and kidnapping of educational personnel, Akoh proposed the deployment of Peace Corps members to schools. He emphasized the need for a comprehensive security strategy that combines community monitoring and early-warning systems to preemptively address threats.

“The initiative aims to provide a multi-layered security framework,” Akoh explained. “It will include trained officers as specialized safety personnel to combat issues such as cultism, drug abuse, and unauthorized access, fostering a proactive, community-based approach to security.”

The deployed officers would focus on constant surveillance and intelligence gathering within school campuses. Akoh noted that maintaining a vigilant presence would allow for the identification of vulnerabilities, monitoring suspicious activities, and detecting potential threats from intruders.

This real-time intelligence would be quickly communicated to conventional security agencies, facilitating a coordinated response to any threats posed to the academic community.

Akoh urged government authorities to recognize the Peace Corps’ potential role in combating banditry in schools, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding the educational future and national development of Nigeria.
