Israeli Air Raid Claims Lives of Family in Gaza
GAZA — An Israeli airstrike on a residential building in the Nuseirat refugee camp resulted in the deaths of three family members, including a six-month-old child, medical officials reported. The incident occurred early Sunday morning as Israel continues to breach a ceasefire agreement established by the United States last year.
The Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir el-Balah received the bodies of the victims, identified as Mohammad Abu Mallouh, his wife Alaa Zaqlan, and their child Osama, according to Reuters. The strike also left approximately 10 others injured.
The Israeli military did not provide any immediate comment regarding the airstrike.
Since the ceasefire took effect in October, there have been near-daily Israeli attacks in the besieged Gaza Strip. Gaza health authorities report that nearly 900 individuals have been killed during this period. Eyewitness accounts from Al Jazeera’s Hani Mahmoud indicate that Israeli bombings commenced as many Palestinians attempted to flee following orders for forced displacement. Some individuals were seen carrying personal belongings, including mattresses, amidst the chaos.
In addition to airstrikes, Israeli forces have been involved in the demolition of homes and civilian infrastructure in eastern Gaza, particularly in areas designated by Israel as military zones, referred to as the “Yellow Line.”
Israeli jets targeted locations in Deir el-Balah on Sunday, causing significant damage near a hospital, Mahmoud reported.
The Gaza Government Media Office noted earlier this month that at least 2,400 violations of the ceasefire had been documented in its first six months, which includes over 1,100 airstrikes and approximately 921 shootings aimed at civilians.
Since the onset of hostilities in October 2023, Gaza has seen more than 72,000 fatalities among Palestinians. Israeli officials confirmed the accuracy of these figures earlier this year after initially disputing them.
In a separate incident on Saturday, five police officers and a 13-year-old boy were killed in another Israeli attack.
Ongoing negotiations between Israel and Hamas, aimed at establishing a lasting resolution to the conflict, have stalled. Both sides have leveled accusations of violating the ceasefire, with Israel citing Hamas’s failure to disarm and Hamas pointing to continued military actions and restrictions on humanitarian aid as barriers to progress.
Human Rights Watch recently emphasized that the humanitarian infrastructure in Gaza remains critically endangered, more than six months after the ceasefire began.
