Bandits Abduct Student in Katsina State
Umaru Musa Yar’adua University student Auwal Mas’ud Shitu has reportedly been kidnapped by armed bandits. Shitu, a third-year student majoring in Pure and Industrial Chemistry, was taken while traveling from Charanchi to Dutsin-Ma on Sunday, May 17, 2026.
The abduction was brought to light on Monday by journalist Bakatsine, who covers conflict and security issues in Nigeria’s northwest region. Bakatsine reported that the kidnappers are demanding a ransom of ₦20 million, a sum that Shitu’s family is unable to pay.
Friends and family members of the kidnapped student are appealing for prayers as insecurity continues to escalate in various communities across northern Nigeria. The ongoing crisis prompts questions about the response from authorities in light of the rising incidents of student abductions.
