BREAKING: Gunmen invade Anambra community to enforce Biafra Day, engage security in shootout

Gunmen Storm Ebenebe Community Amid Biafra Day Observance
Ebenebe, Awka North – A group of unidentified individuals armed with AK-47 rifles disrupted the Biafra Day observance in the Ebenebe community on Saturday. Reports indicate that five men on motorcycles entered the area around 10 a.m., compelling shopkeepers to close their businesses in recognition of the day.
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) designated May 30 as Biafra Day to commemorate those who lost their lives during the Nigeria-Biafra Civil War nearly 60 years ago.
A local eyewitness described the initial actions of the armed men as non-violent, noting that they urged residents to close their shops until 4 p.m. However, the presence of the armed group caused panic, prompting many to flee.
“They were not aggressive at first,” the eyewitness reported. “But there was a lot of commotion as people began to run in fear.”
Following their departure, gunfire erupted in the area. The source confirmed that operatives from the Agunechemba Security Outfit had engaged with the gunmen, leading to a significant exchange of fire.
“Gunshots were heard throughout the day,” the eyewitness added. “At one point, it seemed that the Agunechemba operatives had gained the upper hand. However, later in the evening, the attackers regrouped and returned, leading to further gunfire.”
As the night approached, residents remained on alert, retreating indoors due to concerns over potential stray bullets. “The streets are now deserted, and there is a widespread sense of fear,” the source stated.
The situation remains unclear, with no confirmed casualties reported at this time. Additionally, the identities of the assailants have not been established.
Attempts to contact Comrade Nweke Nweke, the spokesperson for the Agunechemba Security Outfit, were unsuccessful, as his phone lines were unreachable. Local police have not yet issued a statement regarding the incident.
