Iran denies President Pezeshkian ‘resignation’ amid IRGC takeover

Iran Denies Reports of President Pezeshkian’s Resignation

TEHRAN — Iranian officials on Sunday dismissed claims regarding the resignation of President Masoud Pezeshkian, attributing the rumor to a “disreputable foreign network” engaged in spreading misinformation.

Seyed Mehdi Tabatabaei, the deputy head of communications and information at the presidency, took to X to refute the reports, labeling them as “a continuation of previous ridiculous media games.” He asserted that Pezeshkian “will not retreat from serving the people” and emphasized the nation’s commitment to solidarity and resistance.

“They have published their own wishful thinking in place of reality,” Tabatabaei stated. “Their attempts to disrupt the unity of the Iranian nation will ultimately fail.”

In parallel, the IRGC-affiliated Tasnim News Agency reported that a government source had also dismissed the alleged resignation.

However, an article from Iran International stated that Pezeshkian had submitted an official resignation letter to the Office of the Supreme Leader, in which he criticized the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) for its significant influence in government affairs. He reportedly expressed that both he and his administration had been sidelined in major decision-making processes controlled by hardline factions within the IRGC.

Pezeshkian is said to have informed Mojtaba Khamenei of his challenges in effectively governing under the current circumstances, indicating a preference to resign rather than continue in office.

The IRGC has increasingly asserted control over presidential powers and executive decisions, pushing to ensure its interests are considered in any potential agreements related to ongoing conflicts.

Additionally, Tasnim has suggested that Iran may revise its stance if President Donald Trump alters the draft agreement concerning the ongoing negotiations, asserting that Tehran will only accept terms that align with its interests and is prepared for the possibility of no agreement.
