Growing Tension in Osun APC After Omisore Loyalists Resign
By Shina Abubakar, Osogbo
OSOGBO, Nigeria — The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State is facing internal strife following the recent mass resignation of supporters of Senator Iyiola Omisore, the party’s former national secretary.
Omisore, who previously sought the APC governorship nomination, was disqualified from the race along with six other candidates. Reports indicate that efforts to reconcile with party leadership have faltered. The group led by Omisore has expressed dissatisfaction, citing a lack of support for their requests for legislative tickets.
In the past week, more than five prominent figures aligned with Omisore have departed from the party. Among those who resigned are former Education Commissioner Oladoyin Bamisayemi, Commissioner for Political Matters Taiwo Akeju, Special Adviser on Higher Education Jamiu Olawumi, and former State Lawmaker Adeyeye Olajide.
Criticism has emerged on social media from APC members regarding the timing of these resignations, just months before the gubernatorial election. Funso Fagbohungbe publicly condemned Bamisayemi, labeling his departure as an act of ingratitude. Fagbohungbe noted Bamisayemi’s previous roles as a two-term lawmaker and Education Commissioner in the state, arguing that he lacks the moral authority to claim oppression within the party.
“Bamisayemi has previously benefited from APC leadership, and now he levels accusations against the party,” Fagbohungbe stated. “Having roots in the PDP, his decision to return there does not grant him the right to misrepresent our party.”
While the defectors have not formally announced their next political moves, Jamiu Olawumi was seen at the campaign media office of the Accord Party, indicating a possible alignment with Governor Ademola Adeleke’s re-election campaign.
This development highlights increasing tension within the APC in the lead-up to the upcoming elections.
