Two Female Pilgrims from Sokoto State Die in Makkah Following 2026 Hajj
SOKOTO — The Deputy Amirul Hajj and Grand Khadi of Sokoto State, Alhaji Sodangi Acida, has announced the deaths of two female pilgrims from the state in Makkah, Saudi Arabia, following the completion of the 2026 Hajj pilgrimage.
According to a statement from the Head of Information and Communications at the Sokoto State Pilgrims Welfare Agency, Faruku Umar, the deceased have been identified as Ladi Umar from Bodinga Local Government Area and Hadiza Umar from Yabo Local Government Area.
Acida reported that two additional female pilgrims injured in the same incident are currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Saudi Arabia. One is being treated for a fracture while the other is being cared for due to an arm dislocation.
The Sokoto State Government expressed its condolences to the families of the deceased and prayed for their forgiveness and peace in the afterlife.
The Deputy Amirul Hajj confirmed that the first group of Sokoto pilgrims is scheduled to return to Nigeria on June 14. He noted that return flights will be organized on a “first to arrive, first to depart” basis.
Acida also reminded pilgrims to adhere to luggage regulations, emphasizing that each pilgrim’s baggage should not exceed the 32-kilogram limit.
In related news, Alhaji Ibrahim Umar JJ, the Permanent Secretary of the Pilgrims Welfare Agency, extended his gratitude to Governor Ahmad Aliyu for his ongoing support of the welfare of Sokoto pilgrims during the Hajj exercise. He also acknowledged the efforts of the state delegation, the agency’s board and staff, and the pilgrims for their cooperation, which contributed to the successful management of the 2026 Hajj operations.
