Gunmen Attack Mourners in Plateau State, Resulting in One Death and Multiple Injuries

Riyom, Plateau State — Gunmen suspected to be affiliated with Fulani militias attacked mourners in Riyom Local Government Area on Thursday, killing one person and injuring several others. The mourners were transporting the bodies of two victims killed in a prior incident.

Barr. Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri, president of the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM), confirmed the details of the incident in a statement released on Friday morning. He reported that the earlier attack occurred late Wednesday night in the Sol village of Ta-Hoss District, where two individuals were killed.

According to Mwantiri, while the mourners were en route to a mortuary, they were ambushed by the assailants, resulting in the death of one man identified as Toma Chuwang and injuries to others.

“This call follows the gruesome killing of two Berom youths by suspected armed Fulani terrorist gangs who invaded Sol village in Ta-Hoss community,” Mwantiri said, noting the early incident took place around 9:20 p.m. on June 10, 2026. The victims were identified as Davou Dalyop Patu and Dalyop Zaram.

In his statement, Mwantiri expressed deep concern over the ongoing wave of violence in Riyom and neighboring areas, urging security agencies to intensify their operations against armed criminal groups. He indicated that reports suggest the gunmen may have retreated to a nearby Fulani settlement, suspected of serving as a hideout for bandits.

Mwantiri also addressed the issue of widespread destruction of farmlands due to reckless grazing practices in the Gassa/Kassa communities of Ropp District, which he said threatens the livelihoods of local farmers and exacerbates current insecurity and economic hardships.

The BYM called on the federal and state governments, as well as security agencies, to enhance security measures in the region to prevent further violence and support efforts aimed at combating terrorism and banditry. The association also appealed for international assistance in addressing these pressing issues.

In closing, Mwantiri urged residents of vulnerable communities in Riyom and surrounding areas to remain vigilant and to continue sharing credible intelligence with security forces to ensure timely responses to emerging threats.
