Sokoto: Police to begin crackdown on vehicles without number plates

Sokoto State Police to Enforce Vehicle Registration Compliance

SOKOTO, Nigeria — The Sokoto State Police Command has announced a statewide initiative targeting vehicles that lack proper registration number plates, or have plates that are concealed, altered, defaced, or obscured. This effort aims to bolster security measures and enforce compliance with traffic regulations.

The enforcement action is in response to a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu. It seeks to enhance public safety, support intelligence-led policing, and reduce the potential use of unidentifiable vehicles in criminal actions.

In a statement released Friday, Police Public Relations Officer DSP Ahmad Rufa’i detailed that the operation will span the entire state, reinforcing adherence to established vehicle registration and traffic laws.

Commissioner of Police Hayatu Hassan Shaffa emphasized the command’s dedication to safeguarding lives and property. He indicated that the operation is intended to improve security, not to create undue inconvenience for law-abiding citizens.

Shaffa urged vehicle owners to ensure their vehicles are properly registered and equipped with approved number plates. He also cautioned owners of vehicles with non-compliant plates to regularize their documentation to avoid prosecution and other legal repercussions.

The commissioner assured the public that the enforcement activities would be conducted in a professional and transparent manner, strictly adhering to legal guidelines. He encouraged residents to cooperate with law enforcement officers to facilitate the initiative’s success.

The Sokoto State Police Command reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order and urged all motorists to comply with the directive and applicable traffic regulations in the interest of public safety and national security.
