Women protest over deplorable road in Delta

Residents Protest Poor Infrastructure in Orhuwhorun Community
Orhuwhorun, Delta State — Frustrated by the deteriorating condition of their roads and inadequate infrastructure, residents of the Orhuwhorun community staged a peaceful protest on Tuesday.
The demonstration, led primarily by women, saw participants marching through the community while holding placards. The signs featured calls for government action, including messages such as “Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, Remember Orhuwhorun-Owhrode” and “Fix the Orhuwhorun–Owhrode Access Road.”
The protesters appealed to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to address the state of the Orhuwhorun–Owhrode Road. They contend that the road’s condition has caused substantial hardship, inflated transportation costs, and impeded economic and social activities for residents and neighboring communities.
High Chief Oghale Ighodakpo, who attended the protest, stated that the demonstration’s purpose was solely to highlight the challenges faced by local residents. He emphasized that the road’s prolonged neglect has significantly affected local businesses and traders.
“The reconstruction and rehabilitation of the road should be a priority,” Ighodakpo remarked, adding that it is essential for the region’s socio-economic development.
Chief Cyril Onojeghuo, the Vice Chairman of the Orhuwhorun Community, characterized the road as a major barrier to commerce and daily life, impacting traders, students, and motorists who rely on it for transportation.
Mrs. Victoria Ashakpoke, a community leader, described the road’s conditions as intolerable. She noted that residents often face exorbitant transportation fares because many drivers refuse to navigate the swampy and dilapidated route.
“The daily challenges we face in accessing neighboring communities are distressing,” Ashakpoke said. “Due to the poor state of the road, transportation costs have doubled as no commercial transporter is willing to pass through. Our economic activities and overall well-being are being severely affected.”
The residents continue to urge government action to alleviate their ongoing struggles.
