Ogun man, daughter, grandchildren arraigned for impersonating bandits

Man, Daughter, and Grandchildren Charged with Impersonating Bandits

Abeokuta, Nigeria — Fagbenro Olaewe, 40, his daughter Elegbede Nofisat, 19, and two grandchildren, aged 10 and 12, were arraigned Tuesday before a Magistrate Court in Isabo, Abeokuta. They face charges of threatening a woman and impersonating bandits.

The alleged incident occurred June 12, 2026, around 10:00 AM in the Olorunda area of Abeokuta North Local Government. According to reports, the minors used their grandfather’s phone to contact Esther Lawal, introducing themselves as bandits and demanding money while threatening her.

The defendants were charged with conspiracy, threatening violence, and making demands with menace. The charges, detailed under case number MA/4539/2026, assert that they engaged in activities that violated sections 516, 87, and 406 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, 2006.

The prosecution, led by ASP Lawrence Olu-Balogun, asserted that Olaewe had given his phone to Nofisat to charge when the children made the threatening call. “The minors threatened to kill the complainant and her family if she did not comply with their demands,” Olu-Balogun said. Following the call, Lawal reported the incident to local authorities, who then tracked the phone number and arrested the defendants.

All four individuals pleaded not guilty to the charges. Chief Magistrate Mrs. A.K. Araba granted bail to the defendants, setting the amount at N500,000 with one surety each of similar value. Olaewe and Nofisat have been remanded at the Ibara Correctional Centre, while the minors will be held at the Juvenile Home in Asero until their bail conditions are met.

The case is scheduled for further hearing on June 30.
