Group urges Jigawa govt to distribute agricultural equipment without delay

Open Government Partnership Calls for Urgent Distribution of Agricultural Equipment in Jigawa State

The Open Government Partnership (OGP) has urged the Jigawa State government to expedite the distribution of procured agricultural equipment and extension motorcycles to farmers and agricultural personnel. The organization states that the delay is obstructing the potential benefits of these investments.

In a statement issued by Co-Chair Isah Mustapha, who represents non-state actors, the OGP commended the state government for its ongoing commitment to agricultural development. This includes increased funding, institutional reforms, and strategic investments designed to enhance food security and improve farmers’ livelihoods.

The statement highlighted the government’s increase in agricultural budget allocation from less than 5% to between 10% and 12% of the state budget. It also pointed out the establishment of an additional ministry and agency aimed at strengthening agricultural and livestock development in the region.

The OGP also acknowledged the large-scale procurement of agricultural machinery and the establishment of mechanization centers across all 30 constituencies, labeling these initiatives as significant steps toward modernizing farming practices.

However, the organization expressed concerns over the undistributed equipment, which remains unprotected from weather conditions, while farmers face rising production costs and limited access to mechanized services. With over 90% of Jigawa’s population relying on agriculture, the timely deployment of this equipment is seen as critical for enhancing productivity and reducing operational costs.

Additionally, the OGP praised the recruitment of more than 900 agricultural extension workers under the J-AGROG programme but noted that the motorcycles intended for their field operations have reportedly been stored for nearly a year. They warned that the delay could diminish the effectiveness of extension services and lead to increased maintenance costs if the motorcycles deteriorate before use.

The organization is urging the state government to prioritize the swift distribution of both the agricultural equipment and motorcycles, emphasizing that timely action will translate public investments into tangible benefits for farming communities and support the state’s broader objectives of economic growth and sustainable agricultural development.
