Don’t fix programmes during Jummah prayer period – MURIC tells UNIJOS

Muslim Rights Group Urges University of Jos to Respect Jummah Prayer Schedule

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has called on the University of Jos to refrain from scheduling events during Jummah prayer on Fridays. This recommendation follows a statement issued by MURIC’s Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, on Monday.

Professor Akintola criticized the Department of Pharmacy at the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH) for planning a lecture on Lassa fever for June 26, 2026, from noon to 2 p.m. He described the timing as both provocative and unlawful, suggesting it undermines the potential for peaceful coexistence among the university’s diverse community.

“The proposed lecture overlaps with the important Jummah prayer period, which is a fundamental aspect of our faith,” Akintola stated. He urged university officials to reassess their scheduling practices to ensure they do not conflict with religious observances.

He added, “We see this timing as an overreach that infringes on the basic human rights of Muslim staff and students at JUTH and the University of Jos. It is crucial for the institution to uphold principles of religious tolerance and respect the rule of law.”

MURIC’s statement emphasizes the need for the university to avoid actions perceived as disrespectful to religious observances to foster harmony within its community.
