Gas explosion razes three shops, vehicles in Jigawa

Panic Erupts in Hadejia After Gas Station Fire
HADJIJA, Jigawa State — Residents of Hadejia experienced widespread panic Saturday evening when a fire broke out at a Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) retail outlet located along Katagum Road. The blaze resulted in the destruction of three shops, two vehicles, and a motorcycle.
Witnesses reported that the incident occurred as a gas delivery truck was arriving to offload supplies. According to preliminary accounts, the fire was allegedly ignited by an open flame used for preparing tofu, commonly known as “awara,” near the gas facility. An explosion followed as flames came into contact with the gas, rapidly escalating into a significant fire.
As the explosions reverberated through the area, residents and traders fled for safety, with some attempting to salvage goods from nearby shops before the flames spread further. Eyewitnesses described the situation as chaotic, with one stating that the explosions resembled “bomb blasts” as several gas cylinders exploded.
Thick smoke shrouded the vicinity, prompting a swift response from fire service personnel, who were supported by security agencies. Their efforts to contain the fire proved effective, preventing it from spreading to additional buildings.
Jigawa State Police Command spokesperson, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, confirmed that no lives were lost in the incident. He noted the destruction of three shops, two vehicles, and one motorcycle during the fire.
“The fire was successfully extinguished with the support of other security agencies,” he stated.
While the exact monetary value of the property lost has not yet been determined, residents estimate that damages could reach millions of naira. Eyewitnesses reported that more than 10 gas cylinders exploded during the fire, contributing to the chaos.
