Edo State Police Arrest 77 Suspects in June Operations

The Edo State Police Command paraded 77 suspects on Friday, following a series of operations conducted throughout June 2026. The arrests were made in connection with a variety of criminal offenses, including kidnapping, cultism, armed robbery, murder, unlawful possession of firearms, and sexual violence.

Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika addressed reporters during the parade, highlighting the Command’s dedication to public safety and its efforts to foster trust in law enforcement. He noted that the recent arrests underscore the police’s commitment to maintaining order and transparency within the community.

Agbonika explained that the police had ramped up intelligence-driven operations targeting criminal organizations involved in kidnapping, robbery, and violence throughout the month. He emphasized the importance of collaboration with other security agencies and community stakeholders in enhancing crime-fighting strategies.

The commissioner reported a significant disruption of criminal activities due to the sustained crackdown, asserting that efforts would continue to ensure that Edo State does not become a refuge for criminals. He attributed the operational success to the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Bamidele Disu, whose guidance has bolstered community-oriented policing efforts across the nation.

Among the suspects detained, there were 32 individuals accused of kidnapping, 15 suspected cultists, three alleged armed robbers, 11 murder suspects, two individuals charged with unlawful possession of firearms, and 14 linked to various sexual offenses. Additionally, police operations resulted in the rescue of 38 kidnapping victims.

Agbonika expressed gratitude to the residents of Edo State for their cooperation with law enforcement. He emphasized that timely and credible information from the public has been instrumental in the Command’s achievements.

“Security is a collective responsibility,” Agbonika said, acknowledging the support from the state government and praising the collaboration among security agencies in the fight against crime. He also commended local vigilante groups and community volunteers for their active participation in ensuring public safety.
