You must protect Nigerians in South Africa – Rights lawyer, Ejiofor challenges FG
Nigerian Human Rights Lawyer Calls for Action on Safety of Citizens in South Africa
Ifeanyi Ejiofor, a prominent human rights lawyer and lead counsel for the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has urged the Nigerian government to take concrete steps to protect its citizens living in South Africa.
In a statement released on Saturday, Ejiofor emphasized the need for Nigeria to explore all legitimate diplomatic and legal options to ensure the safety of Nigerians amidst rising xenophobic attacks in South Africa. These attacks have prompted several nations to evacuate their citizens and have reportedly resulted in fatalities.
Ejiofor called on the federal government to demand thorough investigations and prosecutions related to these incidents. He stressed the importance of securing effective guarantees for the safety of Nigerians and collaborating with regional and continental institutions to prevent xenophobic violence from becoming endemic in Africa.
“The life of every Nigerian is priceless. The blood of our citizens must never become cheaper than diplomatic courtesies,” stated Ejiofor. “A sovereign state owes its citizens more than sympathy; it owes them protection and justice.”
He highlighted a recent diplomatic clash between Ghana and South Africa following the killing of Bashiru Isak, a Ghanaian citizen shot in Cape Town on June 30, 2026. Ejiofor noted that the Ghanaian government condemned the incident and called for a transparent investigation, the prosecution of those responsible, and enhanced protection for Ghanaians in South Africa.
Ejiofor’s remarks reflect growing concern over the safety of African nationals amid rising tensions related to xenophobia in South Africa.
