Alleged N8.83trn: ‘Tinubu government is grossly corrupt’ — Obi

Peter Obi Accuses Tinubu Administration of Corruption Over Unaccounted Expenditure

LAGOS — Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of significant corruption, alleging that ₦8.83 trillion in expenditures for 2025 was not included in the national budget.

Obi made the allegations in a statement shared on his X account on Sunday, referencing findings from a consultation report by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). He stated that the substantial expenditure was never appropriated in the 2025 budget, which he argues places it beyond legislative oversight and administrative scrutiny.

“The recent IMF consultation report raises concerns about the scale of grand corruption under the Tinubu government. It reveals that around ₦8.83 trillion in expenditure for 2025 is not reflected in the budget, leading to a lack of legislative oversight,” Obi said. “This is troubling.”

He noted that the unaccounted sum represents nearly two percent of Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and over 35 percent of the country’s ₦23.96 trillion capital expenditure plan for the same year. Obi also claimed that this amount exceeds the combined allocations for the education and health sectors in the 2025 budget, suggesting it could have been utilized to enhance public services, generate jobs, and foster economic growth if managed properly.

The former governor of Anambra State characterized the reported expenditures as indicative of ongoing financial mismanagement by the current government. He accused the administration of neglecting fundamental principles of public financial management, warning that such practices could threaten national stability and exacerbate poverty.

Describing the Tinubu administration as “grossly corrupt, incompetent, and insensitive,” Obi emphasized the need for greater accountability in the management of public resources. He reiterated his call for President Tinubu to resign, citing incompetence, unfulfilled campaign promises, and an alleged failure to prioritize the welfare and security of Nigerians.

Obi urged citizens to hold the government accountable through lawful and democratic means.

As of this report, neither the Presidency nor the Federal Government had responded to Obi’s accusations.
