Why Peter Obi can’t be Nigeria’s president — Segalink
Activist Segun Awosanya Critiques Peter Obi’s Leadership Qualities
Social commentator and human rights activist Segun Awosanya, widely known as Segalink, has expressed concerns regarding the leadership capabilities of Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). In a recent interview on Vanguard’s Politics Hub, Awosanya suggested that Obi’s political approach is divisive and primarily influenced by social media dynamics.
Awosanya asserted that Obi, the former governor of Anambra State, has cultivated his political support by capitalizing on public discontent rather than fostering unifying leadership. “It is obvious to the blind and audible to the deaf that someone who postures one way but is actually another should be revealed for who they are,” he commented.
He characterized Obi as a leader of what he referred to as “the mob,” alleging that Obi exploits public anger to undermine others and garner political attention. “He is surfing the wave of the angry people to gain political power,” Awosanya added.
When questioned about the nature of his critiques, Awosanya denied any personal conflict with Obi’s supporters. “There’s no friction between me and anybody. I don’t even recognize them as anything. I’m focused on what I’m doing,” he stated.
Awosanya further claimed that members of the Obidient movement attempted to co-opt the #EndSARS protests for their political purposes. “They were one of the cancerous nodes within the EndSARS advocacy… they wanted to use the movement for their own gain,” he asserted.
Addressing his prior affirmations of Obi, Awosanya explained his earlier remarks were based on Obi’s focus on vulnerable populations. “When I commended Peter Obi, I commended him because he was at the time speaking to issues that border on vulnerable individuals in the country,” he clarified, insisting that his initial praise was more of an observation than an endorsement.
Despite his earlier support, Awosanya remains adamant that Obi is unfit for the presidency due to his alleged history of divisiveness. He pointed to Obi’s governance record, mentioning, “He brought Christians against Catholics when he was governor, and he did a lot of things that he’s preaching against today.”
Finally, he cautioned against conflating prevalent social media narratives with reality, stating, “The fact that the lie is viral doesn’t make it the truth.”
