Lagos govt identifies real cause of persistent flooding
Lagos State Government Addresses Causes of Persistent Flooding
LAGOS – The Lagos State Government has attributed the ongoing flooding issues in the region to poor public habits and unauthorized land reclamation efforts.
Dayo Bush-Alebiosu, the State Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, made these comments during an interview on Channels Television’s “The Morning Brief” on Tuesday.
Bush-Alebiosu stated that these factors have complicated the state’s ability to effectively tackle flooding. “It is important to identify what the problem is in the first place, and the problem is nothing other than bad habits,” he said. He emphasized that illegal land reclamation and dredging on one hand, and harmful public habits on the other, contribute to the worsening situation.
He noted, “Those who habitually dump refuse aren’t doing it for financial gain. However, those who participate in illegal reclamation do so for commercial purposes. So, both sides play a role.”
The commissioner pointed to the dumping of human waste into the lagoon as a significant example of detrimental behavior. He mentioned that recent heavy rainfall has exacerbated flooding in numerous areas of Lagos, stranding residents and hindering mobility.
Footage and images of the flooding have circulated widely on social media, prompting calls from the public for governmental action to resolve the issue.
