Ex-governor Suswam resigns from PDP

Former Benue Governor Resigns from PDP

Former Benue State Governor Gabriel Suswam announced his resignation from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) on Wednesday. He disclosed this decision in a letter addressed to the Mbagber Council Ward in Logo Local Government Area, which was made available to journalists in Makurdi.

In his letter, Suswam emphasized that his choice to leave the party was not made lightly. He acknowledged the opportunities the PDP had afforded him over the years, allowing him to serve the people of Nigeria in various roles, including as a member of the House of Representatives, governor of Benue, and senator.

“For decades, the PDP provided me with a platform to serve the Nigerian people in various capacities. I remain sincerely grateful for the trust reposed in me at different times,” Suswam stated.

However, he expressed concern over the ongoing internal conflicts within the PDP. Suswam noted that attempts by various individuals to resolve these disputes had been unsuccessful, leading him to conclude that resignation was his only option.

“The party that once stood as a symbol of cohesion, internal democracy, and progressive opposition has regrettably become plagued by persistent and unresolved internal conflicts,” he said. He further described the PDP as being in a state of “deep internal dysfunction,” stating that it appeared to be “perpetually trapped in crisis mode.”

Suswam argued that as a democrat, he struggled to align his continued membership in the PDP with his personal beliefs, political philosophy, and his commitment to contributing to nation-building within a stable political structure.

“I believe that political parties must serve as platforms for ideas, discipline, and constructive engagement, not arenas of endless internal warfare,” he noted. “Regrettably, the current state of affairs within the PDP no longer aligns with these ideals.”

He concluded his letter by wishing the party well in its future endeavors and expressed gratitude to the members for their shared experiences over the years.
