Gombe State Government Launches Investigation Following Canopy Collapse
GOMBE—The Gombe State Government has initiated an immediate investigation into the collapse of a section of the entrance canopy at the construction site of the new Gombe State House of Assembly Complex. The incident, which took place on Friday, resulted in one fatality and left seven construction workers injured.
Danladi Adamu, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Works, Housing and Transportation, stated that the collapse involved a cantilevered section of the entrance canopy currently under construction. Of the injured workers, five are receiving treatment at Gombe State Specialist Hospital, while two are being cared for at the Federal Teaching Hospital in Gombe.
In its statement, the government mandated that all injured workers receive comprehensive medical treatment at its expense. Additionally, it has instructed the Ministry of Works, Housing and Transportation, along with relevant emergency and regulatory agencies, to commence safety and accountability procedures to ascertain the cause of the collapse.
The contractor responsible for the project and the supervising consultant have been directed to submit a formal incident report within 24 hours. They are also required to provide a preliminary investigation report, followed by a detailed technical report including findings and recommendations.
The Gombe State Government emphasized that it will base future decisions on the investigation’s outcomes and will take appropriate actions aligned with safety and engineering standards. The government reiterated its commitment to ensuring strict adherence to safety, quality, and engineering standards in public infrastructure projects statewide, and it pledged to provide further updates as verified information becomes available.
