Nine Family Members Killed in Attack in Plateau State
Riyom Local Government Area, Nigeria – Nine members of a single family were killed during an attack by armed bandits and terrorist groups in the villages of Wereng-Camp and Kum. The Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM) reported the incident in a press statement on Sunday.
The assault, which began at approximately 11 p.m. on Saturday, July 11, 2026, continued into the early hours of Sunday. According to BYM, the attackers originated from the Fass area, known for hosting terrorist enclaves near the Jol Community.
The victims have been identified as: Celina James, 38; Yohanna James, 21; Janet Yohanna, 18; Jennifer Yohanna, 3 months; Sele James, 18; Melody James, 16; Reto James, 10; Endurance James, 8; and Peace James, 3 years. Additionally, Pam Yohanna, 40, sustained life-threatening injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment.
The association, led by Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri, expressed grave concern regarding the ongoing pattern of violence targeting predominantly Christian farming communities in the region. They described the massacre as part of a distressing trend that has led to widespread loss of life among innocent civilians in Plateau State and other areas of North-Central Nigeria.
BYM highlighted the destruction of homes, the displacement of thousands, and the urgent need for increased security measures for vulnerable communities. They urged the Nigerian government to enhance efforts to protect residents, dismantle terrorist strongholds, apprehend those responsible for the violence, and ensure justice for the victims and their families.
The association also called for humanitarian support for displaced individuals, independent monitoring of recurring attacks, and sustained engagement with authorities to safeguard civilian populations.
“The ongoing violence in Plateau State must be addressed,” the statement concluded, emphasizing the need for protection, justice, and peace for affected communities.
