Tinubu doesn’t delegate finance officer to present budget – Oshiomhole hits NNPC

Senator Adams Oshiomhole Criticizes NNPC’s Role at National Assembly Hearing

Edo North Senator Adams Oshiomhole addressed concerns regarding the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) during a committee hearing at the National Assembly. He asserted that NNPCL behaves as if it operates above the established government structure.

Oshiomhole remarked that President Bola Tinubu does not delegate authority to present the annual budget, emphasizing the importance of direct engagement between the executive and legislative branches. “Even President Tinubu does not send his finance officer to present the budget prepared by financial experts,” he stated. “We have three independent arms of government.”

During his remarks, Oshiomhole criticized NNPCL for seeming to overlook its status as a government agency. He expressed concern that the company appears to consider itself larger than the system that governs it. “I refuse to believe that the NNPCL is bigger than the system,” he said.

The senator added that if the president takes the time to address both the Senate President and members of the House of Representatives, it raises questions about NNPCL’s self-perception. Oshiomhole alluded to ongoing challenges within the company, describing its current condition as a struggle that should not endure, to the detriment of national progress.

Oshiomhole’s comments underscore ongoing tensions between government agencies and the legislative branch in Nigeria as they navigate the complexities of governance.
