Our lives are in danger’ – Owerri residents lament as flood takes over homes

Residents in Owerri West LGA Urge Government Action as Flooding Overwhelms Homes
UMUGUMA, Imo State — Residents of the Umuguma Federal Housing Estate are calling for immediate assistance from the state government and relevant authorities as floodwaters inundate their homes and disrupt daily life.
In the wake of two days of heavy rainfall, many homes have been submerged, hindering vehicle access and forcing shop owners to close their businesses. Local residents are requesting urgent road reconstruction and improved drainage systems to alleviate ongoing flooding issues.
Chiamaka Enyinnaya, a resident, described how floodwaters have forced commuters to navigate inundated roads. “Whenever it rains, movement becomes almost impossible,” she said, highlighting the significant challenges faced by residents, including difficulties for children traveling to school.
Anayo Ikechi, who operates a local shop, pointed to deteriorating road infrastructure and inadequate drainage as factors contributing to the persistent flooding. “The situation has worsened over the years despite our repeated appeals for intervention,” he stated.
Ebuka, a commercial motorcycle operator, expressed frustration over the conditions of the roads, saying that the risks faced by riders have increased. “Many motorcycle operators avoid this area because the roads are in very bad condition,” he said. “Water enters our motorcycle exhaust pipes, causing frequent mechanical issues.”
Engr. Bethel, a long-term resident, noted that the poor condition of the roads has persisted for nearly five years without significant improvement. He lamented the lack of attention from authorities, despite several appeals. “It is unfortunate that a federal housing estate located less than thirty minutes from the Government House still experiences this level of infrastructural decay,” he said.
Residents of Umuguma Federal Housing Estate are hopeful that their concerns will prompt government action to address the ongoing flooding and infrastructure challenges.
