FIFA Launches Investigation into Post-Match Incidents at World Cup Final
FIFA has initiated a disciplinary investigation following the events that transpired at the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup final, which featured Argentina and Spain.
Tensions escalated among players and coaching staff from both teams as the match concluded, raising concerns about the conduct exhibited during the post-game scenarios.
The decisive moment in the match came in the 106th minute when Ferran Torres scored, leading Spain to victory. Prior to that goal, Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernández received a red card from referee Slavko Vincic for a foul on Pau Cubarsí that occurred in the 90th minute.
Subsequent footage emerged showing Argentina players Leandro Paredes and Nahuel Molina appearing to strike Spain’s Eric García and Rodri. Additionally, Argentina’s coach, Roberto Ayala, was observed hitting Dani Olmo.
In a statement, FIFA addressed the situation, stating, “Following an assessment of the relevant match reports for the FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, and in line with Article 36 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code (FDC), the FIFA Disciplinary Committee has appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to investigate potential breaches of the FDC concerning the post-match incidents.”
FIFA noted that further details would be made available once the prosecutor’s report is completed.
