In a recent interview, NBA legend Chris Paul expressed his preference for Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo over Argentina captain Lionel Messi when discussing the two iconic footballers.
Both Ronaldo and Messi participated in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where Spain emerged as the tournament champion. Ronaldo guided Portugal to the Round of 16, but the team was eliminated by Spain. In contrast, Messi led Argentina to the final, where they also succumbed to Spain.
When asked to choose between the two players, Paul acknowledged the difficulty of the decision. “That is tough because Messi, man, I’d probably have to say Ronaldo,” he said, according to HITC. He added, “I ain’t as dialed in, I have an appreciation for both, but that’s [Ronaldo] more so, who I followed.”
Together, Ronaldo and Messi have garnered 13 Ballon d’Or awards, underscoring their significant impact on the sport.
