Professor Ayo Bamgbose, Founding President of Nigerian Academy of Letters, Dies at 94
Professor Ayo Bamgbose, a distinguished linguist and the founding president of the Nigerian Academy of Letters, passed away in the early hours of Saturday. He was 94 years old.
Bamgbose, who had a long and impactful career at the University of Ibadan, served as a member of the faculty for several decades before retiring. From 1971 to 1973, he held the position of Dean of the Faculty of Arts.
Professor Kayode Adebowale, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, confirmed the news of Bamgbose’s death. In a statement, Adebowale expressed condolences on behalf of the university community, stating, “Our thoughts are with the family, friends, and the intellectual community he leaves behind.”
