Flood claims another life in Abia, as female student drowns
A 12-year-old girl, Sopuruchi Ibe, from Ndia Chukpai Compound in Mgbaga, Ebem Ohafia, Abia State, has been confirmed dead after drowning in a flooding incident on Friday evening.
Sopuruchi, a junior secondary school student at Federal Government College, Ohafia, was caught in heavy floodwaters around 6:00 p.m. along Eni Njoku Road. Community members initiated a search for the girl following her disappearance, but their efforts were unsuccessful.
Tragically, her body was discovered the following morning, prompting widespread mourning within the community.
Ifeanyi Okali, the Publicity Secretary of the Ebem Ohafia Development Union (EODU), expressed sorrow over the incident. “Sadly, 12-year-old Sopuruchi Ibe, who was swept away by floodwaters, has been found this morning, but unfortunately, she did not survive,” he said. He extended condolences to her parents, family, friends, classmates, and the wider Ebem Ohafia community during this difficult time.
Earlier this week, another flooding incident claimed the life of a 37-year-old trader identified as Mr. Ejiuwa in the Ugwueke community of Bende Local Government Area, Abia State, while he was returning from the market.
