Former Senator Raises Alarm Over Rising Violence in Kano
KANO, Nigeria — Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has voiced concerns regarding the increasing activities of violent gangs in Kano State. While the state does not face the same levels of banditry or terrorism seen in other regions, it continues to struggle with criminal organizations responsible for robberies, assaults, and homicides.
In a post on his verified Facebook page on Tuesday, Sani recounted a recent incident during a visit to the state, where he witnessed an attack on a young woman. The assault took place inside a commercial tricycle, known locally as “A daidaita sahu,” where the attackers snatched the victim’s mobile phone, leaving her injured.
“Kano State has no bandits and no terrorists, but they have thugs, violent thugs who snatch phones and injure or murder people with impunity,” Sani stated. He emphasized that this incident underscores the growing insecurity posed by gangs operating within the state and called for immediate action against those responsible.
Sani urged law enforcement to apprehend and prosecute all violent individuals irrespective of their political affiliations. “To end their viciousness and lawlessness, both pro- and anti-government thugs must be brought to justice,” he remarked.
However, he expressed skepticism about whether such actions would be taken as Nigeria prepares for upcoming general elections. “How that can be achieved with the national elections looming will be left to be seen,” Sani added.
His comments come amid increasing public concern over street crime and violent attacks in parts of Kano, with residents calling for more effective measures to enhance public safety and curb criminal activity.
