Seminarian Kidnapped in Benue State Escapes Captivity
The Catholic Diocese of Otukpo in Benue State has announced that seminarian Kelvin Ochai, who was abducted by armed men on July 29, 2026, has successfully escaped from his captors.
According to a statement from the Diocese, Ochai fled his captors on the evening of July 31 and made his way to Aliade in the Gwer East Local Government Area, where he was reunited with his family without sustaining injuries.
The announcement was made by Very Rev. Fr. Joseph Itodo, Chancellor of the Catholic Diocese of Otukpo. He attributed the seminarian’s escape to divine intervention and the prayers of supporters.
“Through the prayers of the people of God, Kelvin escaped from the custody of his abductors,” the statement noted. “He has since been safely reunited with his family and is unharmed.”
Bishop Michael Ekwoyi Apochi of the Catholic Diocese of Otukpo expressed gratitude to the clergy, religious communities, and lay supporters who prayed throughout Ochai’s ordeal. He acknowledged the collective efforts that contributed to the seminarian’s safe return.
In his statement, the Bishop said, “While giving all glory to God, I sincerely appreciate all the priests, religious, lay faithful of the Diocese, and people of goodwill for their unwavering solidarity and fervent prayers.”
Bishop Apochi also recognized the assistance of Rev. Fr. Vitalis Ioryue, members of Saints Peter and Paul Parish in Aliade, and the Nigeria Police Force for their support upon Ochai’s return.
The Bishop concluded by remembering individuals still held by kidnappers across Nigeria, expressing hope for their release. “We continue to commend to God all those who remain in captivity across our nation. We fervently pray that the Lord will grant them safe rescue, protect His people from every evil, and restore lasting peace, justice, and security to our beloved country, Nigeria.”
