Troops Target Terrorist Hideout in Benue State, Five Suspects Arrested
Troops from Sector 1 of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) conducted a successful clearance operation in the Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State, where they destroyed a suspected terrorist hideout and arrested five individuals on August 1.
According to security sources, the operation commenced at approximately 11:00 a.m. and focused on eliminating identified terrorist enclaves within the villages of Atombagen, Chito, Tse Kighr, Tse Anaka, and Sabongida Leke.
Although many suspects reportedly fled prior to the arrival of the troops, the military was able to apprehend five individuals at Sabongida Leke. These individuals are alleged to have connections to criminal activities in the region.
During the operation, troops destroyed structures believed to be part of the operational and logistical framework for the terrorist group.
“This operation was aimed at dismantling identified terrorist hideouts, part of ongoing efforts to impede the movement of armed groups and eliminate their operational bases,” a military official noted.
Military sources indicated that this operation is part of a broader strategy to conduct clearance missions throughout the Benue region, ultimately aimed at disrupting armed group activities and enhancing security in the affected communities.
The detained suspects will undergo further investigation as security operations continue in the area. The military emphasized that this mission is indicative of OPWS’s commitment to degrading criminal networks and preventing the re-establishment of bases in Benue State.
