Graduate in Critical Condition After Stray Bullet Incident in Lagos
LAGOS — A graduate of Lagos State University is in critical condition after being struck by a stray bullet during an armed robbery attempt targeting a Point of Sale (PoS) operator in the Igando area on Sunday.
The shooting occurred on Kayode Onafuye Street in the Alhaji Ede neighborhood, witnesses said. According to reports, four armed individuals arrived on two motorcycles, allegedly trailing the PoS operator to her residence.
Upon their arrival, the suspects attempted to enter the bungalow but were thwarted when the occupants secured the entrance. An eyewitness, who identified himself as Bode, described how the robbers, frustrated by their inability to access the building, began firing indiscriminately.
“The robbers came on two motorcycles and were about four in number. They had traced the PoS operator to her house. When they first got there, they went to her shop, which is very close to the building,” Bode said. “When they discovered that she was not there, they went straight to the house and started calling out the PoS operator while attempting to enter. The occupants shut the entrance door, preventing them from gaining access. Out of frustration, they started shooting indiscriminately.”
Another resident, who wished to remain anonymous for security reasons, reported that the victim was walking along the street when he was caught in the crossfire of the fleeing gunmen. Many individuals in the area were reportedly unaware of the robbery attempt until they heard the gunshots.
“He unknowingly walked into the scene before he realized what was happening. That was exactly when the robbers started shooting after being unable to locate their target,” the resident stated. “It was after they fled that people quickly rushed to rescue the young man and took him to a nearby general hospital. One of those who rescued him mentioned he had just graduated from LASU and was preparing for the National Youth Service Corps program for fresh graduates.”
Following the incident, police officers were dispatched to the scene. A police source confirmed that spent bullet shells were recovered from the area.
“Our attention was drawn to the incident, and our men were promptly deployed to the scene,” the source said.
When contacted on Tuesday, Lagos State Police Command spokesperson CSP Abimbola Adebisi stated she had not yet been briefed on the situation but promised to verify the report.
“The report has not gotten to me. I’ll check and revert,” she added.
