Political Tensions Rise as Amaechi Defends Catholic Church
Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has come under scrutiny from Lere Olayinka, his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, for Rotimi Amaechi’s recent remarks regarding the Catholic Church.
In a post on his X account, Olayinka criticized Amaechi, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential running mate, accusing him of opportunism in the lead-up to the 2027 elections. “Politics has now turned Rotimi Amaechi into an emergency defender of the Catholic Church,” Olayinka stated, pointing out that he views every situation as a chance to gather votes.
Olayinka further recalled Wike’s past electoral victories against Amaechi, noting, “Wike helped him in 2007 and 2011. Wike defeated him in 2015, 2019, and 2023. Who is he?”
Amaechi’s comments came during an interview on Channels Television, where he expressed concern over President Bola Tinubu’s alleged insult toward the Catholic Church. This followed remarks made by Tinubu during a meeting with the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, led by Archbishop Emeritus John Cardinal Onaiyekan, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. During this meeting, bishops raised issues regarding the country’s current state.
Onaiyekan reported that Tinubu dismissed their evaluation of the nation’s situation, triggering backlash from the presidency in response to the archbishop’s comments following the meeting.
