Three Vigilantes Killed in Attack on Plateau State Community

Three brothers serving as vigilantes were killed late Tuesday night when suspected gunmen attacked the Tarai community in the Jol district of the Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The assault occurred around 10:47 p.m. as the local security volunteers were conducting a night patrol to safeguard the area. The victims—Dachung Danjuma, 51, Victor Danjuma, 37, and Nyam Danjuma, 35—were reportedly shot dead at the scene.

Lyop Bitrus, a community member, stated that the brothers were ambushed while performing their duty to protect the residents. “They were keeping watch when the gunmen suddenly attacked them. Sadly, the three brothers were killed on the spot,” Bitrus recounted.

Residents expressed their grief, particularly for Victor Danjuma, who leaves behind a wife and five children. According to a source within the community, Victor’s family had previously fled the area following an attack in the neighboring Tan Jol community. They were reportedly preparing to return home as security conditions seemed to improve.

Rwang Tengwong, spokesperson for the Berom Youth Moulders Association, confirmed the attack. He noted that the assailants targeted the local vigilante team under the cover of darkness. Tengwong condemned the killings and expressed concern over the ongoing violence in Riyom and other areas of Plateau State, despite calls for enhanced security measures.

He urged security agencies to increase efforts to protect vulnerable communities and to ensure that those responsible for the attack are brought to justice.

As of this report, security authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident.
